The Art of the Burn: Candle Care and Safety

1. The First Burn Sets Everything That Follows
Wax has a memory. The pattern established during the first burn shapes every one that follows, which is why getting it right from the start matters more than most people realise.
When you light your candle for the first time, allow it to burn until the melted wax reaches the edges of the vessel before extinguishing it. This creates a full, even melt pool and prevents tunnelling, where the wax burns straight down the centre and leaves hard wax clinging to the sides. A complete first melt pool means cleaner, more even burns every time after that.
Depending on the diameter of your candle this may take two to three hours. It is worth the patience.
2. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn
Before every single light, trim the wick to approximately 5mm. This is the single most effective candle care habit there is.
A wick that is too long creates a large, dancing flame that burns through wax faster, produces soot and makes the candle run hotter than it should. A neatly trimmed wick produces a smaller, steadier flame that burns cleanly and evenly. Small scissors or a wick trimmer both work well.

3. Do Not Burn for More Than Four Hours at a Time
It can be tempting to keep a favourite candle going all evening, but extended burn times put unnecessary stress on both the wax and the vessel.
Burning for more than four hours at a time can cause the jar to overheat and the fragrance to burn off more quickly than it should. Two to four hours is the ideal window for most candles. After that, extinguish the flame, allow the candle to cool completely and return to it another time.
A candle burned with patience lasts longer and performs better.
4. Know When to Stop
Every candle has a natural end point, and it is important to recognise it. Always stop burning your candle when approximately 1cm of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel. Never burn a candle all the way down to the glass.
That small buffer of remaining wax protects the base of the jar from overheating and prevents damage to the surface your candle sits on. When you reach that point, the candle has done its job beautifully. Let it rest.
5. Coconut Wax Behaves Differently
If you notice wax clinging to the sides of the jar during early burns, do not be alarmed. This is entirely normal with coconut wax and coconut blend waxes, which have a naturally soft, creamy consistency and slightly different burning characteristics compared to harder waxes.
The first few burns may leave a little wax on the sides of the vessel. This is the wax memory establishing itself. With each subsequent burn, as long as you allow a full melt pool to form, this will gradually even out. 6. What Not to Do
Do not dig into the wax, push it toward the centre or pour out the melted wax pool while the candle is lit. These actions disturb the wick, affect the burn pattern and can significantly reduce the life of your candle.
Keep the wax pool clear of debris, match ends and wick trimmings. Anything sitting in the melted wax can create excess heat or affect the flame.
Extinguish using a snuffer rather than blowing the flame out where possible. It is gentler on the wick and avoids sending smoke into the room.
